Emily sat underneath one of the many trees surrounding the lake of Salem Academy. It was a large lake, perfect for ice skating, though it wasn't that cold yet. It was cold enough, however, that Emily had to pull out her blue and gray scarf from her trunk and her heavier jacket to go study in the crisp air. Which, might she add, was not happening. Her whole intention on wandering to the lake was to get some peace and quiet so she could concentrate on her Transfiguration test coming up, but mind wandered and refused to focus. She leaned against the tree she sat under, the ground hard beneath her.
As her mind wandered, she stared at the bright blue sky, the sun shining on her, warming her a bit. She smirked some, her breath coming out in a faint wisp of white smoke. It looked like a perfect summer day ironicly, but it was just like a lie. Pretty and calm in apperences, but the truth was cold and bleak when reality hit. She closed her eyes and tried to clear her mind. Why am I thinking about them? She thought. I hate thinking about my family.Emily shook her head some, as if to make the thoughts go away entirely, the various tiny braids in her hair flying around. She sighed and slammed the book in her lap shut. There was no use trying to study now, she was too distracted. She tossed it away from her, into the grass a few feet away and pulled her legs up to wrap her arms around them and rest her chin on her knees.

Ashes shivered. The air was cold, much more so than she liked. Eyes narrowing as she left the school, passing over the frosted grass, she glanced up at the sky. It was sunny, one of the few times it would be in the coming season. Scowling as she continued her brisk walk to the lake, she scanned the area. There was one girl who was sitting, at the moment throwing her textbook a few feet away. Raising an eyebrow, Ashes considered meandering over to her. Do I really want to? I mean, she's certainly not in my house so there isn't particularly any reason to go talk to her or anything. Hm, studying . . . that'd probably be a good idea, she mused.
She was humming a tune softly, one that her mother had often hummed to her when she was younger. The lyrics, although they were fuzzy, still rang in her head. Now, picturing a scene, seen it all before. We drink, we drink a little much, drink a little more. To shake off the nerves and take off the edge, and now is there any way back home? Her father hadn't exactly liked that song, aiming for something in a lighter mood. Ashes didn't like his choice of music, as it was too calm; bringing herself back down to earth, she took in her surroundings. She'd absentmindedly wandered over near the other girl, who she now recognized as someone named Emily.
[ definitely not my best post. x3 ]

Emily was staring foreword, her eyes seeing but not seeing and she let her mind wander, daydreaming a bit. Briefly she wondered when the first Qudditch game was, and decided to check the boards later on today. She chewed on her bottom lip some, her finger tapping out a random rhythm on her arm. She jumped a little when a branch snapped near her and she whipped her head to the side.
It was another student it seemed and from the look of the crest on her clothes she was from Bravura house. Emily hadn't really talked to anyone from that house, but then again she hadn't really talked to alot of people. She glanced again at the girl -she looked younger that Emily- and it looked like the girl really didn't wanted to talk, she looked lost in thought, but Emily called out softly anyway, hoping the girl wouldn't get mad at her.
"Hey. Cold isn't it?" Emily greeted her.

"Hey. Cold isn't it?"
Ashes turned her eyes from the lake and the trees to the other girl. "Unfortunately," she called, quickening her pace so that she wouldn't have to strain her voice. Once she was about ten, twenty feet away she paused, slowing and finding a tree to lean up against. Frowning as she started to move down to the cold ground, she straightened back up and shook off the grass that had already gathered on her robes. Taking a quick glance at the school, then at the sky, she let out a sigh. A full year of school ahead of her and it would probably either be too cold, too hot, or too sunny. It was actually pretty nice out, for her, aside from the fact that the sun was shining and any trees in the sky were hidden by the trees.
Tapping her fingers along the tree of the bark, Ashes continued her humming. Seen it all before and I know the signs. We drink, drink a little much to stimulate the mind. Now it's two hours to go insult everyone that we know. Now it's such a long way home. Her mother had dedicated the song to her first daughter, but Ashes didn't quite understand why. But, she knew that songs had hidden meanings.
"So, how're you?"

Emily stood when the other girl spoke to her, brushing the grass of the back of her robes. The ground had been colder than she thought it would be and the cold had quickly seeped up through the layers of her clothes. She smiled at a the girl and replied "I'm fine. Actually I would be great if it was a tad warmer, but hey what can ya do?" She shrugged some and spoke again. "I'm Emily by the way." Well, Emily was getting her wish. She was meeting more people and being more sociable, and it didn't make her uncomfortable and it was on her own terms. At least her parents would be happy. They were forever trying to get her to come out of the shell she was in, but Emily refused to be part of their silly games. She sighed some and looked back at the girl, smiling some. I think there is a bench around here somewhere, so we don;t have to sit on the ground." She didn't even know if the girl wanted to talk with her, but she offered anyway.
