it was a beautiful fall day, the kind that seventeen-year-old sarena rockwell favored. fall was her favorite season. she loved absolutely everything about it; the leaves, the weather, and halloween. on days such as these, there was a certain location that sarena liked to go. with a hot chocolate in hand, sarena made her way through the woods. she walked for like seemed like hours, but in fact it was only twenty minutes. sipping her drink every once in a while, she walked almost a mile before she found the place she was looking for. it was a beautiful little stream, with clear water that twinkled in the rays of sunlight. orange and red leaves littered the ground, and there were a few flat rocks, perfect for sitting. sarena took a seat on the rock closest to where she stood, and looked around. not many people knew of this place, because they didnt have the patience to find it. with a flick of her wand, sarena had bewitched some of the leaves around her to fly around like butterflies. the overall effect was very pleasant. they flew around her, and some of them floated away, up towards the sun. normally, sarena didn't like to be alone. she liked to surround herself with people who enjoyed her company. however, most of her friends weren't up at this early hour, and she couldn't sleep. sipping her drink, her mind wandered to her potions exam scheduled for the following morning, which she was very confident about. sarena loved potions; it just came naturally to her. she was currently in the N.E.W.T class, and had recieved and "outstanding" on her O.W.L. a moment later, the sound of footsteps approaching and twigs snapping let sarena know she was no longer alone.

there wasn't much about this time of year that hunter disliked. there were cold snaps, warm days, varied weather conditions, none of which she hated, and, most of all, the opportunity to scare people, or make them salivate over her. yes, that's right. october isn't far now, and there have already been conversations about halloween bandied around the common room. the previous night, friday night, had been one of those insanely warm ones where there was hardly any breeze at all, and people would be found saying 'there'll be a storm soon'. being the restless type, especially at night, hunter had opted for something more fun - going to 'sparks', the only nightclub in town, to dance, drink, and party it up. it was early in the morning, that was pretty much all that hunter knew as she stumbled through the forest, having found her secret passage way, despite being enormously inebriated. her phone, which was stuck carelessly in her front right pocket, was dead and incapable of even turning itself on for more than a second - not long enough to see how long she'd been out, or if people would be looking for her, and that's all the good her cell really did in the wizarding section of starborough - it told her the time when she forgot to wear her watch, which was actually quite a regular occurrence, and a great source of annoyance to her. late the previous night and earlier in the morning, hunter had been dancing and flirting with everyone, she knew, and people were buying her copious amounts of alcohol, such was her charm (or her aesthetic appeal, she didn't really care, as long as she got things from people). she had been fine, buzzing a little, definitely drunk enough to stumble in heels, at three in the morning, when most of the people started to drift slowly out of the doors. that was where her memory stopped. she didn't have any recollection of the four hours after that, but when she awoke, it was to the church clock striking seven. her clothes were in disarray, her hair was a mess, and her shoes were nowhere to be found. nothing else was missing, and save a few bruises she felt as she got up off the floor and dusted herself off, she wasn't hurt. the only trouble was that she didn't know how she had ended up on the edge of the forest, or how much of the disarray was due to spending at least seven hours in a crowded club. thinking back on the previous night, hunter started to grow afraid, one hand brushing at the bruises on her legs, a worried and nauseous feeling in the pit of her stomach. completely disoriented, having had no idea what part of the forest she had started off at, hunter was walking in random directions, taking the paths that looked as if they would be more gentle on her bare feet. with a fumbling hand, hunter fished her cigarettes and lighter out of one of her pockets, and lit up, inhaling the nicotine deeply. her hand was still shaking a little as she rounded a corner and almost screamed, seeing someone sat on a rock by a stream that she hadn't known existed. taking another calming toke of her cigarette, stubbing it on a nearby tree, hunter realised that she knew the person. "sarena!" she called out in relief, smiling brightly as if she didn't have a care in the world. "what time is it, pet? i forgot my watch again, and got myself lost in here." she giggled, shaking her head at herself. "you know what i'm like."

sarena was relieved when she recognized the voice calling her name; it was hunter xenith, a good friend of hers, stumbling towards her through the woods. for a minute there, she had almost been scared. not many things frightened sarena, but she had been alone and pretty vulnerable.
her thoughts shifted after she had taken a minute to take in hunter's appearance; she looked like absolute shit. her hair was a mess, she was barefoot, and covered in bruises. normally, sarena loved to party with her, but sometimes hunter took partying a little far.
"it's a little past nine." she said, standing up from the rock and brushing off the back of her jeans. she then walked over to her friend, pulled the ciggarette out of her hand, and stomped it out with her foot. "what are you doing with those cancer sticks, their horrible for you" she continued, pulling a twig out of her friends hair. "what the fuck happened to you, hun?" she finished in an affectionate tone.

it wasn't often that hunter allowed herself to be scared, and it was rarer still that she would let anyone see that something had bothered her. that was why, even as she stopped and recognised the girl, she was already pushing away all the negative and scary thoughts that had overwhelmed her when she had been alone. years of practice had made this easy for her - now all she was thinking about was getting back up to the castle and getting cleaned up, although, for once, the thoughts didn't seem to be going away easily - there was still a niggling and worrisome feeling, and one stubborn thought that just wouldn't settle. sarena turned around, and hunter suddenly grew very conscious of her appearance. as far as she knew, sarena hadn't seen her before she had set off that night, which was something of a relief, as her outfit wouldn't have been recognisable. initially, hunter had only gone for a walk, not to go clubbing, and so she hadn't really been dressed for the occasion. when she left, her shirt had been a normal shirt, worn full length. it was only tied up around her midriff now because the hem was ripped and some of the lower buttons were missing. she had had a headband too, she remembered, and her hand automatically raised to her head. not there, but her hair felt like a bird's nest, and she grimaced. to occupy herself, hunter tugged at the legs of her shorts, attempting to make the offending article cover more of her body, but to no avail. last night, though, they had been full length jeans. hunter chuckled as sarena told her the time. not many people would be up yet, so provided she could get up to the castle before half nine, no-one would ever have to find out about her bruises, which were only on her upper arms and thighs, and most people would have no idea that she snuck out. again. "well that's a relief at least." she grinned, glancing up at the leafy canopy, where the occasional rays of sunlight glinted through as the sun struggled to peek through the clouds. she frowned as sarena took the cigarette out of her hand, and rolled her eyes. "no they're not. they're relaxing." it was the same argument she always gave when someone saw her smoking. only now, she really had a valid reason for needing one. at the question, hunter giggled and shrugged. "a more eventful night than normal. you should've come." hunter responded easily. lying came naturally to her, and there was nothing to suggest that she was worried or scared, however, a thought came to her, unbidden. then maybe what happened might not have done.

sarena could not get over her friends appearance; the bruises, the ripped clothes, the ratnest of hair. it kinda looked like somebody had put her in a paper shredder. sarena walked over to her, muttering a few incantations, which made the bruises fade but not completely go away. sarena had been practicing medical spells for a while, because she found them very useful.
"hunter, you worry be sometimes. do you have any idea of what happened to you?"

hunter was only now, standing still, realising how cold the morning was. whilst the night before had been balmy, the wind had really picked up, and any trace of the lingering summer was gone, instead leaving a distinct impression of the looming winter. hunter estimated that it was about 45 degrees fahrenheit, and to be perfectly honest, she wasn't wearing much. she wasn't really in the mood to stand around in a haunted and dangerous forest when there was a shower to be had nearby, and food to be eaten. sarena pulled her wand, and hunter braced herself, forcing herself to stand perfectly still, not allowing herself to flinch, and not knowing why she wanted to. her friend pointed her wand at various parts of hunter's anatomy, and she followed the spells with a kind of detached interest that only came from learning things in passing. "aw, don't be worried. i'm perfectly fine. clubs can just be a little rough sometimes. and you know what i'm like. i won't let people think i'm a pushover." hunter gave sarena a reassuring smile. "i'm fine." she turned to start to walk away, and pointed in a random direction. "this way?" she asked, not looking back.

sarena wasn't too sure whether she believed hunter was telling the truth about being "fine". and she wasn't exacly wearing clubbing clothes. something had attacked hunter in this forest, the question was, what was it?
suddenly sarena realized she did not want to be so far away from the school anymore. sure, she had known their must have been creatures in the woods, but she had never seen anything threatening. as the wind blew, sarena got the chills and zipped her hoodie a little more.
she followed hunter as she turned back to the school, and realized that she was getting hungry. "i'm getting hungry...." she said absently as she hurried her pace to catch up to her good friend.

hunter never waited to see if people believed her. she was such a fan of lying, and such an expert at it, that she could give the bare minimum and leave people to it. the chances were that, if they didn't believe her, they talked themselves into it because she didn't want her words to be accepted, she didn't force them on anyone, and she genuinely didn't seem to care what everyone else thought. most people that lied went too far, taking things to levels that just seemed unreasonable. hunter wasn't like that at all. she noticed sarena eyeing her critically, and she shrugged. "i didn't plan on going to sparks, but you know me. i can't stay away from a good beat." she laughed easily, picking her way along the forest floor, avoiding all the small insects and bugs that were crawling between the green shoots and leaves of the winter plants that would make the forest look more overgrown than it really was. winter was when very few people, the groundskeeper included, tried to venture into the forest. sarena caught up with her, and hunter slowed slightly, despite feeling the chill. "yeah, i know what you mean. i haven't eaten since lunch yesterday - i was a little preoccupied with vinny at dinner, if you know what i mean." hunter chuckled slyly, never one to keep her conquests to herself. she was in no danger of offending sarena, though, because the girl had only earlier in the week expressed her dislike for said boy. "i think i need a shower first, though." she stated, absently, sniffing her shirt and grimacing in disgust. "and these need burning."

sarena stopped when hunter did. "hunter, your not wearing clubbing clothes. i'm not stupid. tell me what really happened." sarena practically demanded, putting a hand on her hip.
"and a shower would be nice. we can burn the clothes later"she finished, as she began to walk again, taking the lead, heading back towards the school. they were still at least a mile in the woods, and she didn't want to be there anymore. she wanted to be safe in the cafeteria, eating breakfast with her freshly showered friend.

hunter shivered - her choice of clothes really hadn't been the best for the unpredictable weather, but that was hunter. she was just as unpredictable as the weather, and nothing said that she lived in the moment more than her outfits. they always managed to perfectly reflect what she had been feeling at the time, and especially in the fall, she would find that her outfits were completely inappropriate one hour, and perfectly suitable the next. she ran her hands through her hair, trying to work some of the knots out so she looked vaguely presentable for any of the early risers in the castle, although she could always hex anyone that made fun of her, when she retrieved her wand from her dorm. "i told you, i didn't plan on going. i just went for a walk, and i ended up at my old entrance. i couldn't be bothered coming back to the castle to change, and risk getting caught into the bargain. i figured i'd just fix it up a bit, and i'd be fine." hunter stuck to her guns. she wasn't going to worry her friends by telling them that something had happened when she actually didn't know if anything had. in fact, she probably wouldn't bother them even if there was something wrong. hunter always had liked to keep her true feelings to herself. that was why no-one knew her past, or had ever met anyone related to her. hunter said nothing as they started walking, pretending to be paying close attention to where she was placing her feet. after a few minutes of silence, she spoke again. "why're you out this early anyway?" she asked, curiously, glancing at her wrist out of habit, although she knew more than well enough that her watch wasn't actually there. her hand absently gravitated towards her packet of cigarettes, but she stopped herself, knowing that sarena hated it. she stuck her hands in her pockets, and breathed a sigh of relief as the school came into view, picking up her pace in her haste to get clean again.

sarena continued to walk, thinking positive and happy thoughts about the delightful breakfast she would have soon. seeing her friend trying to fix her hair a bit, sarena flicked her wand, and hunters hair went back to its pretty curls.
"you know im skilled at legimency. i could see into your thoughts, if you don't tell me" she said in a joking way, with a bit of serious undertone. "and i was out early because i couldn't sleep, and the stream is one of the prettiest places on the grounds. its soooo peaceful."

hunter ran her hands through her hair, grimacing as she tried to pry apart the knots without ripping her hair out, disentangling the twigs, bits of bracken, and uprooted plant life from her hair. shuddering, she wondered what else had been in her hair, but no sooner had she started wondering than her hair was back to it's natural state. "hey!" hunter exclaimed, playfully. "next you'll be telling me not to bother going for a shower!" she added, laughing. "i'm still going to get my wand, though. i feel so .... muggle.... without it." at the word, she couldn't have looked more disgusted if she had tried. even the word was enough to inspire disdain and noises of abhorrence from the two girls. she rolled her eyes as sarena showcased her skills at legilimency. "yes, yes, we all know how good you are at poking people's brains." she grinned, as if she had nothing to worry about. she prodded her own forehead as her next words came out of her mouth. "anyway, you don't wanna go in here. it's twisted, and dirty. very dirty." she leered, an exaggerated and perverse look on her face. funny thing was, she wasn't exaggerating as much as people thought. a second later, and she was back to her normal self. "yeah, i saw that." hunter smiled easily, jogging up the steps. "wait for me here? i'll be five minutes. ten, tops."

sarena decided to drop trying to get hunter to talk about what happened; she wasn't getting anywhere, and hunter would tell her when she wanted to. she chuckled at her friends comment about her having a dirty mind. she had known that, for she had used legimency on hunter before, a couple years back. sarena loved the magic of legimency, and had been practicing it since her third year, though it was a bit of very advanced magic.
once they were at the steps, sarena took a seat. "sure, i'll wait.

hunter grinned as sarena took a seat on the steps, still choosing to stay outside, despite the brisk breeze and the overall low temperature. "whatever, trevor, i'll not be long. just don't freeze to death or anything." hunter skipped across the entrance hall, not worried at all about anyone seeing her, because the average time for a student to wake on a saturday wasn't until ten or eleven o'clock, and it was still fifteen minutes shy of even the minimum time. hunter quickly reached her dorm, disrupting a few of her room mates as she fished through her drawers and closet for new clothes and stuff before heading into the shower. she released a huge breath of relief as the hot water hit her, and five minutes later, she was towelling herself dry, chatting to her room mates about her events of the night. they were envious of her guts, and wished that they could do what she did, but they'd never dare, as hunter unfeelingly pointed out to them. it wasn't long before she had dressed and transferred all her necessities into her bag, secreting her wand into a holster on her arm, covering it over with her sleeve, and then a leather jacket. even in heels, hunter ran back up the stairs to where sarena was sat, and she dragged the girl up from behind. "come on, lazybones. breakfast!" she enthused, speed walking into the dining hall, heading for the table reserved for her house. she sat down, reaching for whatever was in front of her. she was so hungry that she knew she wasn't going to taste much of what she ate anyway, so there was no point to her being selective. "anyway, what're your plans for the day? i figured i might go shopping. need some more clothes." they both knew that this was a ridiculous statement - hunter probably had enough clothes to clothe the whole school and still have some left over, but she genuinely felt as if she didn't have enough. nevertheless, she treated it as a joke, and laughed. "i think i need new clothes like a fat person needs a condom." she added, making the people within earshot spit out their food in either surprise or amusement, or perhaps even disgust.

sarena grinned as her friend grabbed her arm and dragged her towards the cafeteria. once inside, she took a seat next to hunter, and grabbed a muffin, not caring about the fat, sugar and calories. she sipped milk occasionally as she ate.
"i have no plans for today. i mean i should study, but there's no way i'm going too. wanna go shopping or something?" she asked, pinching off a bite of her muffin and putting it in her mouth, nearly choking when hunter made the comment about fat people and condoms.
"hunter, i love you!" she managed to choke out between shakes of laughter.
